SANGER, CA – Senator Melissa Hurtado (D-Sanger) released the following statement today, regarding the twentieth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks:
 

“On this day twenty years ago, we saw our country experience its greatest tragedy but also our brightest beacon,” said Senator Hurtado. “Our Nation joined together as one to mourn and collectively hold our breath. We cheered and honored our heroes—those fire, police and EMT personnel who ran towards danger. We hugged and loved our families and our neighbors. As we remember the 2,977 people we lost that fateful day, we must work to bring back our sense of togetherness, and put aside our differences.”

On September 11, 2001 nineteen terrorists from al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial jetliners, deliberately crashing two of the planes into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center complex, and the Pentagon. A third plane, Flight 93, crashed into an empty field in west Pennsylvania after crew and passengers fought back against their attacker. 2,977 people were killed in these attacks, from 93 nations.

The first plane hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City at 8:45 am. Less than twenty minutes later, a second plane hit the South Tower of the World Trade Center. An hour later, at 9:45am a third plane crashed into the west side of the Pentagon, headquarters of the Department of Defense. A fourth plane, Flight 93, crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania after its passengers and crew attempted to regain control of the plane.
