Senator Hurtado and Assemblymember Salas announce $2 million investment for a pedestrian bridge overpass

KETTLEMAN CITY, CA – Senator Melissa Hurtado (D-Sanger) released a statement today, announcing a $2 million investment for a pedestrian bridge in Kettleman City:

“No parent should worry about the safety of their children as they cross the street to go to school,” said Senator Hurtado. “Every child should be safe at all times and this bridge will keep families safe for years to come.”

“The safe crossing of Highway 41 for residents both young and old has been in the works for many, many years,” said Rosa Maldonado, Office Manager, Kettleman City Community Services District.

“I am proud to have fought for additional funding for Kings County,” said Assemblymember Salas. “With the construction of the Kettleman City pedestrian bridge, our kids will be able to get to school safely and parents will no longer have to worry about their children braving traffic just so they can get an education. This is an important project for our community that will benefit generations to come.”

For years, Kettleman City has tried to get a pedestrian bridge across Highway 41. Highway 41 sees increased traffic throughout the weekend, as residents of the Central Valley head to the coast. During the week, the bridge will provide children who attend Kettleman City Elementary a safe place to cross the road.

About Senator Melissa Hurtado

Senator Melissa Hurtado represents a new generation of Latina leaders as the youngest woman ever elected to the California State Senate and a product of immigrant parents. Senator Hurtado represents the 14th Senate District and focuses on rural community issues that often go unheard — access to clean air and water, food insecurity and poverty, inequities in environmental policies, agriculture and access to health care. In July 2020, she was appointed to the national Biden Latino Leadership Committee alongside former Labor Secretary and current Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis – the only two California Latinas on the Committee.
