SACRAMENTO, CA – Senator Melissa Hurtado (D-Sanger) issued the following statement upon the passage of the Golden State Stimulus plan to provide support to Californians suffering through economic hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic:

“As chair of human services, it is my mission to uplift families out of poverty and provide opportunities for Californians. I was proud to co-author this package which provides critical relief to families, workers and business owners who have struggled to make ends meet during the pandemic. Passing this stimulus package will help millions of Californians, and my office will continue to ensure that relief money is spent wisely and the Valley gets its fair share.”

The stimulus package of immediate action includes:

• $600 stimulus checks for 5.7 million Californians
• $2 billion in grants for small businesses and nonprofits
• $35 million for food and diaper banks
• Fee relief for barber and cosmetology businesses
• Fee relief for restaurants and bars that have experienced economic impacts due to the COVID-19 pandemic
• $400 million for childcare providers
• $100 million in financial aid for low-income community college students
• Almost $6 million in support for CalFresh to assist university and community college students facing food insecurity
