Sen. Hurtado, Kern County Officials and Local Labor Announce Bill Seeking Funding and Expansion Support for Meadows Field Airport

BAKERSFIELD, CA – Senator Melissa Hurtado (D-Bakersfield) touted the economic benefits for Kern County residents of a bill making its way thru the California legislature during a press conference at Meadows Field Airport alongside Bakersfield Mayor Karen K. Goh, Kern County Supervisor Philip Peters, Local Labor Leaders, and County Airport officials. The bill, Senate Bill 661: the AERO Act, funds and expands the airports like Meadows Field by redirecting aviation fuel tax revenue to support modernizing infrastructure, attracting new air service, and meeting growing passenger and cargo demands.

“This bill is a long time coming. It brings real investment to places like Meadows Field, places that have been overlooked for too long,” said Senator Melissa Hurtado. “Folks here deserve more flight options, more good-paying jobs, and infrastructure that actually meets our needs. That’s why the Legislature backed this bill across the board, and why the Valley is behind it too. We work hard, we stay rooted, and it’s time we have the same opportunities to grow and connect as the rest of the state. This bill is about fairness, common sense, and about making sure the Valley’s voice gets heard.”

“This bill recognizes the unique role Kern County plays in California’s economy, from agriculture and energy to logistics, aerospace, and defense. Reliable air service is a cornerstone of our economic diversity, and SB 661 helps us build the connectivity and infrastructure we need to continue to grow and thrive,” said Philip Peters, Kern County First District Supervisor. “I commend Senator Hurtado for her leadership and vision in authoring this bill, and I urge my colleagues to join us in supporting a more convenient, connected, and exciting future for Kern County.”

“Bakersfield is growing fast, and SB 661 helps our airport keep up with that growth,” said Mayor Karen Goh. “This bill brings real investment to Meadows Field: more flight options, better infrastructure, and more good-paying jobs right here at home. SB 661 helps local businesses grow, attracts new ones to our region, and gives families more ways to stay connected. Bakersfield is proud to support this common-sense bill.”

"CWA Local 9416 proudly supports Senate Bill 661 because it invests directly into regional airports like Meadows Field and the hardworking people who keep it running. Our members at Piedmont Airlines are ready to support more flights and expanded service. Senator Hurtado’s bill helps bring better infrastructure, good union jobs and a stronger future to Bakersfield," said David Martinez, President CWA local 9416.

"The commitment of local and state leaders to the success of Meadows Field Airport is greatly appreciated. Their support is instrumental in meeting the community's growing needs for convenient and expanded air travel," said Interim Airport Director Michael Musca.

The Bill has received unanimous support in the California State Senate. It is now eligible for consideration by the California Assembly before making its way to the Governor’s desk.

“I want to thank the folks who showed up today: our city and county leaders, airport staff, and community advocates who never gave up,” said Senator Hurtado. “They’ve been the fuel behind SB 661 from day one. When we come together across county lines, we remind the rest of California that the Valley doesn't just show up: we lead. This bill is taking off because of everyday people who care deeply about this place. I’m proud to stand with them and keep pushing for what makes sense for our families and our future.”
