Sanger, CA – Central valley COVID-19 relief package advances to the Assembly for approval. This district-specific legislation focuses on clean water, jobs, workforce training, and protecting our most vulnerable. “As a region, perseverance has long been a part of who we are. Lifting Children & Families Out of Poverty
SB 1103 (Hurtado): Workforce training programs: farmworkers
This legislation will give people who are unemployed workforce training programs through supportive services. Workforce training will apply to those who were jobless before the pandemic and anyone out of work because of COVID-19. By providing this training, we can cut our region's unemployment, secure good jobs, and help jump-start the economy.
Protecting our Most Vulnerable
This legislation will require the Department of Social Services to establish a task force to address housing policy and care needs of low-income individuals who are blind, disabled, or over 65 years of age and receiving public assistance. Under the current recession, there are even fewer options for those who are lower-income, and this legislation will ensure that our safety net population is better protected.
SB 1264 (Hurtado): Human Services: guardians for the severely disabled
This legislation extends emergency and disaster preparedness to residential care facilities for the elderly, adult residential facilities, and other care facilities licensed in California. This preparedness is especially important as these protections apply to COVID19 related readiness.
SB 1341(Hurtado) CalWORKs: family reunification
This legislation will prevent homelessness and poverty by ensuring parents remain eligible for CalWORKS during reunification with children.
Clean Water & Clean Air
SB 559 (Hurtado): Friant-Kern Canal
This legislation will fund the restoration of the Friant-Kern Canal through a Federal and State partnership. Restoration and create a sustainable groundwater solution for the southern central valley.
SB 974 (Hurtado): California Environmental Quality Act: small disadvantaged community water system: exemption
This legislation will bring jobs and clean drinking water to small and rural disadvantaged communities and schools by exempting these projects from CEQA review. By upholding the state's commitment to the Human Right to Water and streamlining project approvals, we can help bring clean water faster to communities that need it most.
SB 1012 (Hurtado): Oil and gas wells: hazardous or idle-deserted wells and facilities
This legislation will create a new program for Kern County that will plug abandoned hazardous or deserted oil wells and facilities. These wells are dangerous to the community and the environment. The legislation is seeking $3 million ask for this new project that will result in new jobs created. This win/win situation helps put people to work and addresses these dangerous abandoned hazards.
