Senator Melissa Hurtado Issues Statement on the Nomination of California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to be U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services
SANGER, CA - California State Senator Melissa Hurtado (D-Sanger) released the following statement regarding the nomination of Xavier Becerra to United States Secretary of Health and Human Services:
“President-elect Joe Biden made an excellent choice by selecting California’s Xavier Becerra to be U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services and the first Latino to hold the position.
The nation’s health has never been a higher priority with Covid-19 devastating our families, medical workers, health care systems and economy. We need a proven and tested leader to help heal and restore our country and Xavier Becerra will help deliver on that mission.
As a Californian and Chair of the California State Senate Committee on Human Services, I’m especially excited and grateful to know we will have a U.S. Secretary who understands the unique needs of California and the Central Valley. Mr. Becerra was born in Sacramento and married an extraordinary doctor from Fresno – together, they know first-hand the struggles of Valley families and I look forward to working with the new Secretary to help improve the lives all Californians including children, senior citizens and people with disabilities.”
About Senator Hurtado
Senator Melissa Hurtado represents a new generation of Latina leaders as the youngest woman ever elected to the California State Senate. Melissa is the daughter of immigrant parents and is the first in her family to graduate from college. As Chair of the State Senate Committee on Human Services, she has fought to expand access to healthcare, quality schools and good paying jobs. In July 2020, she was appointed to the national Biden Latino Leadership Committee alongside former Labor Secretary and current Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis – the only two California Latinas on the Committee.
