Hurtado to Chair Select Committee on Human Security
SACRAMENTO, CA – Tomorrow, Senator Melissa Hurtado (D-Sanger) will Chair the Senate Select Committee on Human Security at 1:00pm.
“The Select Committee on Human Security will look at topics ranging from healthcare to economic security, and will follow facts and science to evaluate the necessary responses and mitigation tactics to support the livelihood and dignity of all people,” said Senator Hurtado. “The first hearing will focus on the hidden human impacts the drought has had on Californians. We are seeing the drought impacts across the state, and our most vulnerable communities are experiencing the greatest consequences.”
Human Security is an analytical and proven framework, which is a people-centered, comprehensive approach to identify and address widespread challenges that affect the survival, livelihood and dignity of people. This approach is taken in many international organizations, as well as at the federal level. Its tenets include the freedom from want, freedom from fear, and the freedom to live in dignity—protecting people from severe and pervasive threats and situations.
This year, Senator Hurtado attended the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) virtual series. This virtual series was a follow up to the Global Parliamentary Summit against Hunger and Malnutrition held in 2018. The 2018 Summit Against Hunger and Malnutrition served to support capacity-building activities for parliamentarians and strengthen the political dialogue surrounding programs being developed in each region.
This year’s “Food Security and Nutrition in the Time of COVID-19” addressed the impacts the virus has had on food and agriculture, including the needs of vulnerable populations, ways to maintain global food trade, ways to keep national supply chains moving, and how to secure the right to food.
