Flanked by water officials and agriculture advocates Wednesday at San Luis Reservoir, Senator Melissa Hurtado (D-Sanger) called on dramatically increased investment in California’s water infrastructure in the face of crippling, ongoing drought conditions. Hurtado’s comments come 59 years to the day after President John F. Kennedy dedicated San Luis Reservoir in 1962.

Senator Melissa Hurtado (D-Sanger) sent the following letter to the State Water Resources Control Board on Tuesday, urging the Board to consider the human economic and food-related impacts its proposed emergency water curtailment action could have on the Central Valley:
One day last month, water in the community of Teviston, about 66 miles south of Fresno, suddenly stopped flowing.
The town’s services office fielded calls from residents who said their taps ran dry, and when city leaders opened their own faucets, nothing came out. Soon, officials realized that the town’s main well had stopped working.
