Two bills authored by Democratic State Senator Melissa Hurtado, who represents the 14th district that includes Porterville, advanced in the Senate on Wednesday.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Senate Bill 1066 (SB-1066) is currently in the Senate Appropriations Committee. The bill was proposed by Central Valley State Senator Melissa Hurtado earlier this year.

Hurtado says the drought has been so bad over the past few years, not only is it hurting crops, it's also drying up the pocketbooks of farmworkers.

The bill, introduced by Sen. Melissa Hurtado (D–Sanger), aims to provide financial assistance to farmworkers struggling to afford basic necessities. Wednesday it passed in a state senate committee, four to one.

LEMOORE, Calif. (KFSN) -- The 19th Avenue overpass along Highway 198 in Lemoore is now officially known as the Officer Jonathan Diaz Memorial Overcrossing.

Officer Diaz died in November of 2019. He was trying to break up a fight at a party when he was shot.
