Fresno, CA – Health care leaders, state legislators and medical professionals from across the region gathered in Fresno on Friday to highlight two new programs that have already directed more than $110 million in state tobacco fee revenues across the state which specifically help improve access to health care in the Central Valley. With 30 percent of the statewide award going to the Central Valley, UCSF – Fresno will be receiving $2.8 million for 15 residency slots. Meanwhile, the City of Fresno is expected to receive a total of $4.4 million for 22 positions.




SACRAMENTO, CA – State Senator Melissa Hurtado (D-Sanger), representing the 14th Senate District in California, which includes cities in Fresno, Kern, Kings and Tulare counties, launched the inaugural 2019 Hurtado Holiday Baby Formula and Infant Nutrition Drive, in partnership with Central California Food Bank and the California Association of Food Banks. The drive addresses the need to tackle the southern Central Valley’s child food insecurity rate, which currently sits at almost 25 percent in Fresno, Tulare and Kern counties.

SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senator Melissa Hurtado’s (D-Sanger) legislation, SB 436, which would help prevent child abuse and neglect. The bill, which received bi-partisan support, will formalize Family Resource Centers (FRC) as a key delivery network of services and as conduits to strengthening families via family-centered, community-based and culturally sensitive services that include cross-system collaboration with the goal of helping to prevent child abuse and strengthen family connections.




SACRAMENTO, CA – Last week, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senator Melissa Hurtado’s (D-Sanger) legislations, Senate Bill 513 and 351. The bills will address expanding healthier access for communities in rural and unincorporated areas by providing relief for families without reliable access to water as well as ensure access to resources from the Transformative Climate Communities program.




SACRAMENTO, CA – Last week, Senator Melissa Hurtado (D-Sanger) moved three additional bills to the Governor’s desk. The legislation, SB 351, SB 453 and SB 260 aims to provide unincorporated communities with access to implementation funding from the Transformative Climate Communities program, make it easier for older adults and people living with disabilities, as well as their families, to access support through additional funding, and help ensure Californians maintain health coverage.




SACRAMENTO, CA – Senator Melissa Hurtado’s (D-Sanger) legislation, SB 559, was extended into a two-year bill during its review in the Assembly Appropriations Committee. The bill, which has received bipartisan support, helps secure California’s water supply by setting up a policy framework to invest in the Friant-Kern Canal, one of San Joaquin Valley’s most critical water deliver facilities.
